Photo shoots with three children under the age of 5 are highly overrated.
Here's 1 Recipe for Disaster:
Ingredients:
3 small children
2 of which are babies
1 tired husband
1 lovely afternoon
1 determined mommy
289 assorted pumpkins & gourds
35 other sets of parents as crazy as yourself
50 kids all not wanting their pictures taken
Begin by dressing the children accordingly, in outfits that do not clash with each other, and that complement pumpkins. Then, pack a lovely lunch to be eaten on the grounds in an attempt to appease the children. Next, drive to the crowded pumpkin patch and try to spread your good attitude around. Mix your children together, in a clump, and try to get them to face you and your camera. Then, try again. Then, make funny faces and try again. Then, make loud, increasingly exasperated noises and try again. Then, recruit your husband's help and try again. Then, make promises and try again. Then, make threats and try again. If children still will not all look into the camera, start huffing around in desperation, until finally you are ready to admit defeat. Remain defeated for 10-12 minutes until 3:50, when you swear you'll never try this again. (Until the Christmas card pictures, that is.)
Yield: 5 family members feeling like this:
Sadly, this very well may be the best shot I got:

oh Stephanie, that is so funny! I have been there and can relate, but admit it, you did have fun, even if just a little bit!

Don't feel bad. I only have one and this is how all our photo shoots go. You're much more ambitious then I am... it gives me something to look up to (and strive for)!
I am sorry Steph -
At least the pictures you got made us all giggle :) (I know, they are evoking the WRONG emotion, but Elizabeth's face is just priceless!)
Hi, am one of Candace Sabo's close friends and I clicked on your blog a few posts back. And just to let you know, you are hilarious! It makes me feel better to know that there is someone out there that is going through exactly the same things you are. Especially the whole picture taking scene. Have a good day!
But isn't this about capturing reality? Ideally it would be nice to have a perfect scrapbook full of perfectally happy, smiling events, but there's such joy in the "real" photos, too, even the crying baby shots. Glad you're feeling better.
If either one of us wins Kim C.'s giveaway, can we loan out the books to each other? I really want to read a couple of those.
This is an old recipe that has been in my family for years! Eat it up now, you'll miss it when they're all grown, I bet :o)

uh oh. Unhappy baby.
I just have to say I love your lil punkins! Tears & Gourds & all!
Hello, Adrienne! Nice to "meet" you, and thanks for the compliment.
Glad lots of you can relate!
stephanie, emma is growing so fast!! she's beautiful :)
I feel your pain. There were whole years I didn't even bother trying.
Beloved daughter,
Of course I know you're more than half in jest, but I'll bite anyway.
Having seen your stunning 'partial baby' shots (close-ups of chubby hands, feet, cheeks...all of them priceless) you know that the day of the posed smiley-shot is all but over in our clan!
Beyond that, some of the best photographs of people, children especially, are candids and other un-posed situations with flora, food, and fauna.
The thing about small people is that they're really so much more intriguing, delightful, and photogenic than big people. This in mind, when you have the camera in hand just let them be little people.
You'll consume much more time and many fewer frames, my dear love, but the results will delight you.
Love,
'Grandfather'
